The Best Way To Structure Your Website’s Navigation For Powerful SEO

This article covers some of the most basic SEO navigation tips for on-page SEO. Each simple tip is then expanded so that it becomes more powerful. The trick to well optimized navigation is to give the user as little information as possible, so that they do not become spoilt for choice, whilst giving the search engines lots of information–without resorting to black hat SEO such as hiding links or text. This article shows you how to do just that.

The Sitemap

There is a lot of confusion between the .XML sitemap and the websites “sitemap”. They are two different entities, and both are very important. The .XML file that you submit to the search engines is very important because it tells the search engine about every page you have on your website (unless you leave some off of the list).

It is a very efficient way of getting every one of your web pages listed on a search engine. The other type of sitemap is one that you have on your website for your users to use. It is a single page (usually named sitemap), which will ideally have a link to every web page on your website.

The second type of sitemap is not always possible because you may have hundreds of web pages on your site, and you may be adding and removing them on a regular basis. In this case you should have your sitemap pointing to the categories on your website (which rarely change). Not only will a sitemap help to reduce your websites bounce rate, it will also help the future search engine bots to navigate your website and index any new pages.

The Powerful Sitemap

You can ramp up the power of this technique by putting your sitemap on the home page. This has been very skillfully done by quite a few web designers, and is a powerful SEO tool because it makes crawling and indexing your site a lot quicker, which is good if you frequently update your site (like you are supposed to). All you need to do is create a footer and add in links to different categories. For example you could have one that is called “our services” and has a list of your services below.

Your URLs

Your domain is the starting bit of your website. It is the “” bit. A URL is the name of a webpage that is attached to your domain, for example, “”. You need to make sure that your URLS are not complex so that you the search engines can index them more easily. You should also stay away from dynamic URLs and re-direction URLs too. When naming your pages, make sure you name them simply so that you do not have overly complex URLs.

Your Powerful URLs

You can ramp up the power of this technique by descriptively naming your web pages and categories. If you have a web page about selling carrots, you will not doubt have keywords such as “carrots”, “buy”, “for sale”. You can use these keywords in your URL so that they add to your pages SEO. So you would name your page “Carrots for sale”, and make your URL look like this, “”. If you really want to exploit this technique then use the same trick with your categories. For example you could have a “on sale” category, so that your URL would look like this, “”. That way you are adding even more keywords into your URL.

Make your homepage a link farm (almost) for the rest of your website.

You will be punished by Google if your website is too internally linked, but this does not apply if you only extensively link on one or two pages. As a rule of thumb, have at least five links on every web page. One of those links must be pointing towards your home page. On your home page you should have lots and lots of links.

How do I do this extensively for the most powerful results?

Firstly you put in your footer sitemap as suggested above. You have a menu at the top of the page, which gives a link to each category. You have links placed within the text of your home pages (try to make them your keywords). You must add in a scrolling advertising board.

This is a small section of your home page that rolls different graphics and adverts for the other pages of your website. Each graphic should have a link pointing to an internal page. You must also add links, ALT text and titles to every image on your home page. The link should go to somewhere on the website that has some relation to the title of the image.
